Registering a car in Germany is surprisingly efficient — if you know the process.

Whether you’re a local, expat, or non-resident buying remotely, this guide breaks down every step you’ll need to follow in 2025, with tips for avoiding common pitfalls.

Let’s walk through the entire process from start to finish.

🧾 Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Before you even think about booking an appointment, you’ll need to prepare several documents. The requirements are strict — even one missing form can delay the process.

See the full list in What Documents Do I Need to Register a Car in Germany

🛡️ Step 2: Get Your eVB Number (Insurance Proof)

The eVB (Elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung) is a digital code proving that your car is insured. You must have this before you can register the car.

We provide this automatically with our registration service. Note: If you're using a foreign license, not all insurers will issue one — learn more in Can I Register a Car in Germany with a Foreign Driver’s License?

📍 Step 3: Confirm Your German Address (or Agent)

A car can only be registered to an address in Germany. If you’re a non-resident, you’ll need a service address or to authorize a local representative (like us) to register the vehicle for you.

📆 Step 4: Book an Appointment at the Zulassungsstelle

The Zulassungsstelle (vehicle registration office) handles the official paperwork and plate issuance.

  • Appointments can take a few days to secure, especially in big cities.
  • Bring all documents, the eVB number, and ID.

If you’re registering remotely, our agent handles this for you.

🔠 Step 5: Receive Your Plates and Tax Confirmation

Once approved, the office will:

  • Register the vehicle in your name or company
  • Confirm your insurance and tax obligation
  • Issue your license plate number
  • Stamp your green Teil I & Teil II documents (vehicle papers)

You’ll then take the number to a local plate shop for printing — usually done same-day.

⏳ Step 6: Drive Legally in Germany or Across Europe

Once your car is registered, you’re legal to drive in Germany and throughout the EU (as long as you comply with insurance and residency rules in each country).
