To register your car in Germany, the required documents vary depending on where the vehicle is coming from:
If the Vehicle Is from Germany (BEST WAY):
-
Original Vehicle Registration Certificate – Part II (Fahrzeugbrief)
-
Original Vehicle Registration Document – Part I (Fahrzeugschein)
-
Valid safety and emissions inspection report. If done outside Germany, it must meet the 2014/45/EU standard and include the statement: "Roadworthiness Certificate according to 2014/45/EU."
-
If the inspection report is from outside Germany, a VIN verification by a German inspection agency such as TÜV or Dekra is required.
-
Existing license plates, if the vehicle is still currently registered.
👉 Registering your German vehicle is the easiest and best solution, for simplicity, access to a large market of great vehicles and easier to sell. We recommend this option highly
If the Vehicle Is from Another EU Country (MORE DIFFICULT):
-
Original registration documents (or local equivalent)
-
Certificate of Conformity (COC) or equivalent
-
Proof of ownership, such as a copy of the sales agreement or bill of sale
-
Valid safety and emissions inspection report meeting the 2014/45/EU standard and stating "Roadworthiness Certificate according to 2014/45/EU", if done outside Germany.
-
VIN check by TÜV or Dekra in Germany. This may require transporting the car to an inspection station or asking the seller to provide export plates so you can drive the vehicle into Germany.
-
Existing license plates, if the vehicle is still registered.
👉 Registering your non German vehicle from another EU country is possible but it does add complexity to the registration. We can help you to navigate this process
If the Vehicle Is from a Non-EU Country (AVOID!):
-
Proof of payment of import duties and taxes
-
Original registration documents (or equivalent)
-
Certificate of Conformity (COC) or similar
-
Proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale
-
Valid safety and emissions inspection report that:
-
Meets the 2014/45/EU standard
-
Includes the VIN clearly on the report
-
States "Roadworthiness Certificate according to 2014/45/EU", if done outside Germany
-
-
Existing license plates, if still registered elsewhere
👉 Registering vehicles from a non-EU country is not worth all the hassle involved. Instead we recommend that you sell your non-EU vehicle and buy a car in the EU, preferably Germany
