1. Find and purchase a vehicle

Start by choosing and buying a vehicle in Germany. You can do this independently or with help from MyGermanCar. 

2. Get insurance

Most European insurers won’t cover you without a local address. That’s why our service comes with an insurance policy included as standard. What's more, we will pass on the best rate we get from a top German insurance provider, with no mark up. You can choose basic, partial or complete cover.

3. Complete inspection (TÜV)

If your vehicle hasn’t already passed inspection, we’ll schedule a TÜV safety and emissions test. This certification is valid for two years and is required for registration.

4. Register the vehicle

We take care of the full registration process. That includes submitting documents, obtaining license plates, and dealing with the DMV so you don’t have to.

Once your car is insured, TÜV-certified, and registered, it’s ready to drive. We will courier your shiny new German license plate to your car dealer and they will fit your plates. Then you can collect your car and drive it, fully registered, fully legal, fully insured and with MyGermanCar right here if you need any other support.

One-time registration fee: €149
This covers the initial setup and registration of your vehicle in Germany.

Monthly service fee: €99
This includes ongoing registration, compliance, vehicle tax management, and support while your car is in use under MyGermanCar.

Insurance & tax: Quoted separately, with no additional markup

We deal with top-tier German insurers and pass their quotes directly to you. Pricing depends on the vehicle:

For an average car, expect around €800 per year. For high-value or luxury vehicles, insurance may range up to €3,000 per year

Vehicle tax is calculated based on car type and emissions. Typically, its costs €100 per year on average.

The car will remain legally in your name, as per your sales contract when you buy it. The car will be registered to our company, so that it can have German registration & insurance. You own it, we register it.

In Germany, things work a little differently than in many other countries. You are the legal owner of the vehicle; your name will be on the bill of sale (Kaufvertrag), and you retain full ownership at all times.

However, the car will be registered to our German company (Halter). This means that in the vehicle registration documents, MyGermanCar will be listed as the registered keeper (Fahrzeughalter), while you remain the legal owner.

Similarly, the insurance policy is taken out under our company, ensuring full coverage from a top German insurer - something not usually available to non-residents.

This structure enables:

• Full German registration with license plates (Kennzeichen)
• Valid German insurance
• Legal ownership by you
• No need for a German address or residency

It’s a unique setup designed to give you the freedom to own and drive a car in Europe without the usual bureaucracy or restrictions.

Once we receive all the required documents and your insurance is approved, registration typically takes 2–5 business days.

Thankfully Germany is very efficient for car registration but delays can occasionally occur
*if the dealer is slow to provide the original vehicle documents
*if the car still needs a safety and emissions inspection (TÜV)
*due to national holidays or local processing backlogs.

We’ll keep you updated every step of the way and coordinate with the dealer to make the process as smooth as possible. In most cases, you’ll be ready to collect your fully registered and insured vehicle within a week.

Note: Be wary of any online firms offering same day registration. While Germany is efficient, it is not likely to get registration completed in 24 hours turnaround. There are several steps that need to be done carefully and professionally. We work quickly but we don't cut corners.

Short answer is, no, its not possible. In Germany, it will next to impossible to register your car through a company service such as ours but insure it personally. Since nobody really does this, we don't offer it as a service. When you register your car using MyGermanCar, you need to also have insurance. The good news is, our rates will likely be much better than any quote you could get individually because we insure many cars this way, so we get the best deal from our insurance partner and pass those savings to our customers.

Another huge benefit is that since we insure the vehicle, you automatically get the benefit of our company's existing No Claims Bonus. So, if you don't have a clean NCB history, it doens't matter, you benefit from our NCB upon registration. And it doesn't get affected if any of our other clients have a claim. Your NCB will only be affected if you have a claim at some time. If you do have accident and you need to make a claim, we will assist with all the paperwork. Our insurance can provide replacement car, depending on your policy.

To summarize: Even if you could obtain insurance elsewhere, as the registered "keeper" of the car, it is our policy to provide the insurance quote from our trusted, top tier partners (e.g. Axa, Zurich). Note that we do not charge any mark up on our insurance quotes, we pass the rates on directly from our insurance broker. 

Yes! Anyone can buy a car in Germany, you don't need to live there. But for registration, tax & insurance you do need a German address. That's where we come in! We will be the registrant and the insured party. So, you own the car and we handle everything else. A non-EU resident will have a very hard time trying to get their German car insured in a regular way. That's why people use MyGermanCar.
